Highway
Insurance Holdings Plc, formerly Ockham Holdings Plc, was created in
1995 from the Sturge Group. In December 1998, Highway merged with New
London Capital PLC to help strengthen the group’s balance sheet.
Highway’s motor insurance was underwritten through several Lloyd’s
syndicates.
Market research led management to the decision to build a specialist
motor insurance business based on relationships with insurance brokers
and other intermediaries. As a result, in January 2000 Highway
Insurance Company Limited, an FSA regulated company, was set up as a
subsidiary of Highway Insurance Holdings Plc. In its first year in
operation, Highway Insurance Company Limited reported audited pre-tax
profits of £5.8m. Over the last few years the group has been
rationalised, the history ring-fenced and the business focused, with
any non-core assets sold. In 2003 Highway exited Lloyd’s and now
underwrites exclusively through Highway Insurance Company Limited. Today,
Highway Insurance Company Limited is one of the UK’s largest and most
profitable motor insurers operating from five locations. Highway
specifically avoids the direct selling techniques favoured by most UK
insurers and is one of the few insurers to offer their products
exclusively through intermediaries. The current management team remains
focused on tight financial controls and the creation and realisation of
significant shareholder value. Highway Insurance Holdings Plc is
a London Stock Exchange listed company. Its principal business activity
is motor insurance underwritten exclusively by its subsidiary Highway
Insurance Company Limited, an FSA regulated insurer. Highway
Insurance is one of the UK's most profitable motor insurers. In 2006,
Highway will have more than 600,000 customers, representing total
premium income of £265m. It is one of the few remaining insurers to
offer its products solely through intermediaries, of which there are
